Autobiography of an East anglian poacher. The author began life as the only child of a professional soldier, subsequently becoming one child of seven of an unemployed ex-soldier. Father's solution to the problem was to take up poaching. Following this apprenticeship, the author eventually took up gamekeeping, which career he followed for fifty years "on such prestigeous estates as Great Witchingham, Raynham and Somerleyton. Social history, domestic trivia, comic mishap and expert information are all included in a book through which runs a rich vein of country lore".
