Inspired by the Fisheries Exhibition of 1883, these are articles on the natural history and culture of freshwater fish, originally published in the Saturday Review. Chapters on eels and elvers, carp and carp-culture, pike, perch and other freshwater fish. Of its time - the author believed that eels spawned in fresh water - but good well-written essays. This suede-bound issue is the same as the first edition except that the title-page is not dated and is printed only in black. The title-page of the first edition was printed in black and red. This style of binding was popular in the early years of the twentieth century.
