John Voelker wrote his books under the pen-name, Robert Traver. Voelker was a lawyer by profession, ultimately becoming a justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. A court room drama based very closely on a case in which Voelker had acted as defence counsel. This book had sold six million copies in the US by 1976 and was used as the basis for a film and a musical.
