The first of a well regarded series, followed by Fifty Favourite Dry Flies and Fifty Favourite Nymphs, with illustrations by the author. "This book is intended to bring to the expert and novice fly-dresser alike those patterns that have qualified for the term 'favourite', a word that can be applied equally to the ancient Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear or such relatively modern patterns as Richard Walker's Chomper series. It is important to mention that the term 'nymph' has been applied loosely, and that I include some shrimps and beetles." Most illustrations are "drawn from life, for many of the flytyers mentioned in the book kindly provided me with patterns of their work".
