Founded and originally edited by Bernard Venables, illustrated with colour photographs, mainly by Michael Prichard, and with illustrations by Venables and others, Creel was, and still is, the most highly respected angling journal. It attracted the best writers whose style and ethos are still admired today. Venables is listed on the title-page as Editor until December 1964, then from February 1965 onwards John Nixon is given as Editor and Michael Prichard as Art Editor. (Prichard was mentioned as Photographer and Art Editor from the very first issue, but did not make it to the title-page until after Venables had left). Contents of this issue include:- News and reviews; Natural minnow for trout - Colin Gamble on tackle and tactics; A statement of opinion by Fred Buller; Build yourself a beachcaster - Peter Howse offers advice and short cuts; Lure action counts... not colour by Peter Rayment; Roach pole eulogy - Deryck M. Swift with words of praise; West Country coarse fishing by Colin Scull; Secrets that lay in the tide by Winston Hall; Pollack for the Scotsman - E.L. Matthews recalls a windy summer day; Kinsale - a holiday guide - Prof. A.F. Magri MacMahon on the resort he knows so well; The Driffield Canal reborn - Eric Allen discusses a fine mixed fishery; Sea column - Clive Gammon asks for recognition of a porbeagle record; The long and the short - Frans Domhof - a Dutchman wonders about rod lengths; Quite soon it will be May - Bernard Venables revisits the trout stream; Letters to the editor; East Anglian angler - Ian Gillespie with light tackle catches a cod and achieves an aim; A midsummer night's dream - William Donald writes of sea trout; Scottish sea angling - Laurie Robinson continues his series; Classified advertisements.
