THE ATLAS OF BREEDING BIRDS IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND.

BIRDS OF OUR COUNTRY AND OF THE DOMINIONS, COLONIES AND DEPENDENCIES: THEIR LIFE, EGGS, NESTS AND IDENTIFICATION. Advisory editor David Seth-Smith. Two volume set.

(1939-1940) ND (1950) new edition. Two volumes. Small 8vo (132 x 189mm). Ppviii,1212. B/w photographs and illustrations, colour plates. Green cloth, spine titled in black with black bird motifs.

Originally published as a series of 24 pocket-sized stapled paperbacks from 1939 to 1940 priced at 6d. each. This is a copy of the two volume hardback edition, undated but published around 1950, identified by book advertisements on the dust-wrappers. "There will be a great welcome for this new edition of Birds of Our Country, long recognized as a standard work of reference. With its 1,173 photographs and 24 coloured plates it is, at its price, the most comprehensive and useful book of its kind now available. Every bird native or migrant to the British Isles is listed alphabetically, and full details given of appearances, habits, nest and eggs. A similar plan is followed for birds found in the other countries of the British Commonwealth. Identification has been made as easy as possibly by cutting the descriptions short and laying stress on the distinctive points of each species, and avoiding technicalities".
