"Situated in the far south-west of the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the 14,000 acre estate and deer forest was laid out in 1850 by the proprietor of Lewis, Sir James Matheson, Bt., as his personal game preserve. He built a large shooting lodge on the shores of Loch Morsgail, which served as his summer residence for around a quarter of a century. Although not a sportsman himself, he used Morsgail to entertain his family and important guests, providing them with grouse shooting, salmon fishing and deer stalking facilities. following the death of Sir James Matheson, in 1878, the island of Lewis passed to his widow, Mary Jane, who let out Morsgail to a succession of sporting tenants until she died in 1896. Her successors, Mr Donald Matheson and major Duncan Matheson continued to operate this letting regime until the Matheson family sold the 404,100 acre estate to Viscount Leverhulme in 1918. Leverhulme retained Morsgail in-hand for his own use for much of his tenure of the island of Lewis. After his death, in May, 1925, his executors disposed of the various shootings, deer forests and fisheries on Lewis including Morsgail, to individual landowners. The property has since been operated as an independent sporting estate and has changed hands on a number of occasions over the past eighty five years". Chapters include: Morsgail in the time of Sir James Matheson, 1844-1878; sporting tenants at Morsgail, 1879-1918; The Leverhulme years, 1918-1925; Morsgail as a private estate, 1925-1955; The Morsgail Estate 1955-2017; Gamekeeping at Morsgail; Game at Morsgail; Pages from the game book of Sir Francis Denys, Bt; Morsgail in 1892; The Big Stag at Morsgail; Morsgail game records, 1877-2000.
