THE ANGLER'S GUIDE TO IRELAND. Fifth edition.

RUSTIC SKETCHES; being rhymes and "skits" on angling and other subjects, in one of the south-western dialects; with a copious glossary, and general remarks on country talk. By G.P.R. Pulman.

(1842) 1871 3rd edition. 12mo (125 x 180mm). Ppxxxvi,162 + 2pp ads. Light blue printed stiff card covers, with plain green cloth spine.

A rather rambling book which begins with a thirty-six page essay on the survival of many Old- and Middle English words in the south-western dialects. This is followed by seventy-four pages of dialect verse, much of it concerning fishing, and an eighty-eight page vocabulary of the Somerset dialect. Apparently largely concerned with the speech of Somerset, the author also touches on that of Dorset and Devon. An entertaining read which would be of value to anyone interested in etymology and the south-western dialects of English. First published in 1841 as "Rustic sketches: Poems in the dialect of east Devon." There was a second edition in 1853.
