WORKING TERRIERS. By "Dan Russell".
(1948) 1980 new edition. Small 8vo (123 x 191mm). Pp97. B/w photographs adverts to front free end-paper. Light blue boards, spine titled in gilt.
'Dan Russell', Gerald Jones, was a Fleet Street journalist and terrier afficianado. This is a very readable little book in which he describes all sorts of terrier work as well as following various side-alleys such as the plausibility of fox-dog crosses - examples of which he discovers. A good read. Chapters include, buying and trying; bringing up the young entry; digging out foxes; badger digging; badger hunting at night; hunting the otter; ratting; stoats, moorhens and rabbits; odd things that happen; the fox-dog cross; the breeds of working terrier. The dust-wrapper illustration on this edition was taken from the (extremely rare) dust-wrapper of the first edition of Captain Jocelyn Lucas's Hunt and Working Terriers, published by Chapman & Hall in 1931.
