MODERN DEVELOPMENT OF THE DRY FLY: THE NEW DRY FLY PATTERNS, THE MANIPULATION OF DRESSING THEM AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES OF THEIR USE. By Frederic M. Halford.

THE FLY MAKER'S HAND-BOOK: illustrated with coloured plates representing upwards of fifty of the most useful artificial flies for trout and grayling fishing. By an angler.

(1855) 1886 (2nd edition) - later issue. 24mo (106 x 134mm). Pp45. Illustrated with 9 chromolithograph plates (not hand-coloured as most records say) showing 50 flies. Limp green cloth, upper cover titled and decorated in gilt.

Our researches show that this book was first published in the 1850s, thirty years earlier than other authorities state. The second edition was newly illustrated with chromolithograph plates by the then owner or manager of Edmondsons, Henry Whitty (1841-1930). This (later) issue lacks the advertisement for Edmondson's catalogue, and has both of the references to Edmondson and Hutchinson as suppliers of hooks erased and over-printed (using a rubber ink-stamp) with "Allcocks." So, either Edmondson's had gone out of business, or the stock of the book had been acquired by someone else who did not want to promote Edmondson.
