"The knowledge of the distribution f the lichens of the British Isles is very imperfect and, even in this condition, can only be obtained by consulting many books and papers. The production of the Census Catalogues of Mosses and Hepatics by the British Bryological Society stimulated so much interest that great advances have been made in the knowledge of the distribution of these plants. It is hoped that this compilation of a provisional Census Catalogue of British Lichens will, in a similar way, advance the knowledge of the distribution of lichens. The work of compilation has been in progess for over thirty years. Thousands of specimens have been examined and hundreds of 'floras' and other works have been consulted." Laid in is a letter to the author from Jos. M. Duncan to J. Grant Roger. Roger had asked Duncan to tell him of his own observations. Duncan's observations are marked in the margins with 'C' in pencil.
