"In 1927, I had been summoned from the Llanos of the Orinoco to report on plantiferous territories in Western Abyssinia. Having accomplished this, I proceeded to Addis Ababa - and so found myself confronted by a long-sought goal, the opportunity to explore the Danakil country... I feel happy that I was born in a time, if only just in time, to employ the ancient slow method of exploration, by which the very taste and smell of remote and primitive territories is forced, even though it be painfully, on the observation of the traveller. The scientific results of the expedition were presented to the Royal Geographical Society on my return to Europe in 1928. In these pages I have related the vicissitudes of our journey as I write them in my journal, together with such descriptions of men and places as I was able to record."
