FAVORITE FLIES AND THEIR HISTORIES: With many replies from practical anglers to inquiries concerning how, when and where to use them. By Mary Orvis Marbury.
(1892) 1988 facsimile reprint. Large 8vo (168 x 242mm). Ppx,522. Colour plates of flies, b/w photograph plates, engraved plates, foreword by Silvio Calabi.
Mary Orvis Marbury was the daughter of Charles Orvis, founder of the famous American tackle business. She ran the fly-tying department and this book is based on a questionaire sent out to Orvis's customers. "In the main, this work consists of a collection of letters from numerous fishermen in thirty-eight states, geographically arranged. The letters are records of actual experiences of seasoned angles. The author desired, above all, to assemble a body of practical information to assist fishermen 'when going to new waters'." (Dust-wrapper blurb from 1955 Branford edition.)
