.# A very varied collection of essays which however, nearly all follow the same purpose. The book contains one six-page section on angling, Maxims and Hints for an Angler. By A Bungler. This was contributed anonymously by a friend of Jesse's". One of the chief objects I had in view in writing the following pages, was to portray the character of animals and to endeavour to excite more kindly feelings towards them I have much pleasure in thinking that this object has in some degree been answered, and that many persons have been induced to turn their attention to those faculties in animals, which entitle them to a higher place in the scale of intellect than has usually been assigned to them. The numerous well-authenticated facts which have been brought forward of fidelity, sense, discrimination, courage, and perseverance, under peculiar and unusual circumstances, should induce every one to treat the animal creation with tenderness, and to mitigate those miseries and sufferings to which they are too much exposed. It has ever been my opinion that no time can be more advantageously, and at the same time more innocently employed, than that which is devoted to the study of Natural History".
