GROUSE AND GROUSE MOORS. By W.A. Adams.

(1889) 1998 new edition. 8vo (132 x 205mm). Ppxiv,114 + 32 pp publisher's catalogue at rear. B/w illustrations by C. Whymper and new sketches by Rodger McPhail. Maroon boards, gilt grouse motif to upper board, upper board and spine titled in gilt.

This is a facsimile reprint of W.A. Adams' Twenty-Six Years Reminiscences of Scotch Grouse Moors, originally published by Horace Cox, "The Field" Office, London in 1889. Adams' "account of seasons with grouse in the years from 1863 to 1888 is a sporting gem, a valuable cameo of what upland shooting and fishing was like, especially in Sutherland and Caithness, in the era when the new railway system had helped to make northern Britain a little more accessible to the Home Counties sportsman". Adams rented a great amount of land which he studied intently and managed with some success for sport. This was in the era when the sporting visitor was more directly involved with the native population and before London's notions of comfort and gracious living had taken hold. A fascinating document of its era. New 4-page foreword by Colin Laurie McKelvie.
