The author points out that the various breeds of gundog were originally developed for work with the gun, but that shows and field trials, subsequently introduced to improve the breeds, have now too often become an end in themselves, with a resultant divergence of type and adverse effect on the dogs concerned. He feels strongly that even where it is only wished that the dog should be a pet a course of training on the lines he indicates will benefit both the dog and owner. A working dog, he argues, should have work and to deny it even a facsimile of the real thing is to stifle the dog's natural inclinations and spirit.
