NOTABLE ANGLING LITERATURE. By James Robb, LL.D.

1947 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 222mm). Pp229 + 2pp publisher's ads. B/w photographs. Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt.

Dr James Robb's book, published in 1947, is an indispensable reference work both for the angling literati and the casual reader. In his Preface he remarks: "The number and excellence of the books devoted to the exposition of angling are so great that no other sport can compare with it in these respects... As indicated in the title, the intention is to refer to much that is outstanding in that literature." Notable Angling Literature is divided into four sections: Part I: Appreciations of some Notable Angling Writers and their Contributions (Walton, Scrope, etc.). Part II: Lest We Forget (Ronalds, Plunket Greene and Hills are among those discussed). Part III: Books which Anglers should Read (split into areas - Trout, Sea trout, Salmon etc.). Part IV: A Selected Bibliography of Angling Literature (divided into Books Before 1900 and Since 1900). As well as a critique, information is given on the lives of the famous figures of angling literature and Robb quotes freely from their works giving tantalising sips of angling's literary vintages. The first edition, published shortly after the war under 'authorised economy standards' uses relatively low quality paper and cloth and so is almost always in rather used condition.
