SALAR THE SALMON. By Henry Williamson.
(1935) 1949 1st Penguin paperback edition. 8vo paperback (112 x 180mm). Pp224. Not illustrated.
This is the first of many paperback editions of Henry Williamson's famous story of the life and adventures of an Atlantic salmon. This edition is published "in association with Faber and Faber Ltd." Penguin had an extremely advantageous deal with the Canadian government during the war whereby Penguin published huge print runs of books for the Canadian armed forces and were paid in paper. Being rich in paper at a time when this commodity was in very short supply on this side of the Atlantic, Penguin supplied other publishers with paper in return for sole rights to reprint subsequent paperback editions. This accounts for much of the huge post-war Penguin catalogue, and this book presumably also originated in this arrangement.
