SALMON FISHING: PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE. By Richard Waddington.
1959 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 224mm). Pp306. Colour frontispiece of flies, b/w photographs, illustrations. Salmon pink/red cloth, spine titled in silver-gilt.
"I have written two books on Salmon Fishing and this is enough for any man and assuredly enough for his readers. But, my publisher tells me, there is still a demand for both of these books and they are both out of print. So, rather than that they should each be reprinted separately, I was persuaded to create out of the two books one single volume which would contain both the philosophy and the practice of my own fly fishing methods. Here in your hands is the result. It contains the meat of both previous books which has been amended and added to in the light of subsequent experience; and it is a very fair description of the train of thought and the techniques deriving from it which one man employs to catch salmon on a fly." The contents of the book are divided into three parts: Part I - A philosophy of salmon fishing; The salmon in fresh water; Why the salmon takes the fly; When the salmon takes the fly; The mechanism of breathing; Where the salmon takes. Part Two deals in detail with sunk line fishing. Part Three discusses greased line fishing.
