THE LONE SWALLOWS: AND OTHER ESSAYS OF BOYHOOD AND YOUTH. By Henry Williamson. Illustrated by C.F. Tunnicliffe.

(1922) 1946 reprint of 1945 illustrated edition. 8vo (124 x 191mm). Ppxvi,243. B/w illustrations by C.F. Tunnicliffe. Green cloth, gilt titles to spine.

The first edition of this book appeared in 1926, with a dust-wrapper by C.F. Tunnicliffe. This second edition, with illustrations by Tunnicliffe appeared in 1945". This illustrated edition of 'The Lone Swallows' is uniform with three other nature books by Henry Williamson: 'Tarka the Otter' which won the Hawthorne Prize for 1928, 'The Peregrine's Saga' and 'The Old Stag.' Mr. Williamson has retained the title of his first 'nature book,' together with most of its contents. Otherwise it is a new book, containging as it does many new chapters, including the long Nature Diary which was written just before the Great War. A comparison of this document, its unprecedented clarity of style, observational detail, and joie-de-vivre with the essays and stories writted five years later, when the youthful war-veteran went to live in Devon, is, in the opinion of the publishers, one of the most significant things about what is essentially a poet's book". Some of the revisions take the form of interesting marginal comments by the author, such as where he had originally made something up, and in connection with selling swallows for food in Italian markets, "Mussolini has stopped most of that now, one hopes".
