THE BRITISH SPORTING GUN AND RIFLE: Pursuit of Perfection. 1850-1900 "The period 1850 to 1900 witnessed the most far reaching changes sporting gun and rifle design had ever experienced. Prior to this, changes had been pedestrian and the muzzle-loader still ruled the day in 1850 as it had done for previous centuries. In this major work the author details the many changes that occurred. Was £60.00 NOW £25.00 |

We have a busy week or two with the Grayling Society AGM in Winchester this weekend and the British Fly Fair International at Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent next weekend. Our new books are all coming together for the BFFI so I thought I'd update you on their progress. We have already taken delivery of the paperbound Flytyer's Editions of Brook & River Trouting and The Practical Angler. Both look wonderful, but I am especially pleased with the cover and colour plates that Terry Griffiths has designed for our new edition of The Practical Angler.
The spiral bound edition of Oliver Edwards' Flytyer's Masterclass will be delivered here today. I have already seen advance copies and they are stunning!
Tomorrow I leave for Winchester, calling en route at Welshpool to pick up our new catalogue, then at the bookbinders at Ludlow to collect the first copies of the Flyfisher's Classic Library editions of Carter Platts Grayling Fishing and The Practical Angler. The binders are working on the de luxe edition of Masterclass right now, but we do not expect finished copies of these until the eve of the Fly Fair. The de luxe editions have an actual fly, tied by Oliver Edwards, beautifully mounted inside the front board of the leather binding. There are twelve different flies represented, and I hope to have at least one copy of each pattern available by the Saturday morning of the BFFI. Limited to 120 copies, these are selling very fast. I think that Oliver's signature pattern, the Heptagenid Nymph has almost sold out. His Large Stonefly Nymph is terrifying!

Memoirs Of A Hunter: Experiences In Finland And Russia
Translated By Ingmar Remmler Editor Martin Hollinshead Remmler pursues wolves with borzois as a guest of the Neratovs, runs down lynx, bears & more wolves with famous Finnish huntsmen, hunts seals on ice floes with commercial sealers where he is swept off in an ice storm, surviving only by luck. He buys eagles at Russia's greatest eagle market, and makes innumerable observations on the society around him. After WWI Remmler moved to Sweden where he ran a business collecting wild animals live for zoos & collections around the world, pioneering the safe trapping of elk. This is a fascinating and unique account of a life divided
between middle class St. Petersburg, the Russian aristocracy & the
vast multinational peasantry.

The Forgotten Flies of Roger Wooley
By Watson (John N.)
A detailed account of all of Roger Woolley's surviving fly collection, all unfamiliar patterns originated by Woolley himself and never previously published. The patterns "range from tiny midges to a huge salmon fly, and a selection of older mayfly patterns; dates are unknown, but many of the dressings appear to have been made early in Woolley's career; there is speculation that they may have been personal favourites, good sellers or successful patterns reserved for certain clients. ...They provide an illuminating insight into the work of one of the twentieth century's most highly respected professional fly-dressers, known for its quality and innovation".

THREE IN NORWAY, BY TWO OF THEM.
By Lees (James A.) & Clutterbuck (Walter J.)
"First published in 1882 the book tells, in an engaging humorous and deadpan style, the adventures of three friends who set out to fish and shoot through one long summer, travelling by canoe and camping along the way. This amusing party make light of the rigours of outdoor life in Norway and enjoy every minute of their idyllic tour. Pristine lakes full of big eager trout, which have never seen an artificial fly, heather hills rich with ptarmigan and deer, the sturdy characters among the Norwegian country folk they encounter, all are described with a freshness and verve which are irresistible. With a new introduction by Jon Beer who followed in the footsteps of Lees and Clutterbuck over 100 years later.

HAMPTON'S ANGLING BIBLIOGRAPHY: FISHING BOOKS 1881 - 1949.
Revised & expanded by Ken Callahan and Paul
Morgan.
A new and much enlarged edition of John Fitzgerald Hampton's Modern Angling Bibliography, revised and augmented by sporting booksellers Ken Callahan and Paul Morgan, with over 140 pages of new material. The first serious attempt at a British angling bibliography since the supplement to Westwood & Satchell's Bibliotheca Piscatoria in 1901, Hampton intended the 1947 edition to be a stop-gap pending accumulation of more material. Whilst the planned sequel never appeared, a draft of it was preserved. The present work incorporates corrected and augmented entries from this draft as well as the first edition. The extent of Callahan and Morgan's new material exceeds that of the whole 1947 edition, and this edition amounts to a wholly new work. Used in conjunction with Bibliotheca Piscatoria, we expect this book to be the standard bibliography on the subject for many years to come.

Angling with the Fly: Flies and Anglers of Derbyshire and Staffordshire
By Watson (John N.)
"Charts the history and develpment of flyfishing in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. [The author's] detailed research brings together the lives and backgrounds of many noted Derbyshire and Staffordshire fly-fishers for the first time in this comprehensive, but highly readable work; he discusses the evolution and features of local patterns, winging patterns and the notes and fly-dressings of noted angler-authors from the 18th and 19th centuries [as well as] anglers of influence up to the present day". Very well-illustrated with plates of flies from Aldam, Foster, Roger Woolley and other early writers and fly-tyers and with many two-page spreads of the flies of more recent Derbyshire flyfishers. Many of the traditional flies were tied by Tim Thorpe and photographed by Terry Griffiths. A first-class and authoritative production of great value to the angling historian and also to the Derbyshire fly-fisher and -tyer of today.
