A FLY FISHER'S LIFE. By Charles Ritz. With an Introduction by Bernard Venables. Translated [from the German] by Humphrey Hare. First English Language Edition.

1959 1st English language edition. 4to (174 x 252mm). Ppx,230. B/w photographs, illustrations. Robin-egg blue cloth with black spine label titled in gilt. Foreword by Ernest Hemingway, Introduction by Bernard Venables.

With an Introduction by Bernard Venables, Preface by L. de Boisset and a short Foreword by Ernest Hemingway. One of the great angling books of the twentieth century. Much of the book is on technique, especially Ritz's famous "High speed - high line" method of casting. Ritz was a well-known hotelier and fishing tackle designer. His reminiscences of fishing, especially in Europe, make wonderful reading. I note that in the chapters on specific fish, the grayling is the first on his list, and the salmon last.
