"On July 17th, 1911, a majority of one in the House of Lords decided the great Wye Fishery Dispute in favour of the Earl of Chesterfield and Mrs. Foster, the Riparian Owners, and against the Freeholders, in part of seven miles of the Wye, in the Manor of Wormelow. The Freeholders claimed an ancient right to fish there, and resisted the exclusive claim to part of the fishery which the Earl and Mrs. Foster as brinkers, recently set up." "Many men will remember the way in which [John Lloyd] championed the Hoarwithy fishermen some years ago when their claim to rights of free fishing in the Wye was being examined, and the pamphlet full of historical instances which he published in support of them. He published many pamphlets in the course of his life..." (Salmon and Trout Magazine, August 1915).
