A SPORTSMAN AND NATURALIST'S TOUR IN SUTHERLANDSHIRE. By Charles St. John. "Popular Edition".

(1849) 1891 "Popular Edition". 8vo. (140mm x 208mm). Pp320 + 16 pp publisher's catalogue at rear. Illustrated with b/w plates based on the author's own sketches. Red cloth, spine titled in gilt.

Largely roe deer, gamebird and wildfowl shooting (to say nothing of golden eagles and ospreys), but includes many mentions of fish and angling throughout". The present volume consists of extracts from a Journal, written during a wandering excursion through Sutherlandshire, one the most interesting counties in Scotland, and one of the least known; of a series of field-notes for each month in the year, written during my residence in the pleasant land of Moray; and of a few miscellaneous chapters of interest to the sportsman. Such as they are, I offer them to the public, trusting that they will receive them as the off-hand thoughts and observations of one who is more accustomed to the hillside than to the study - to the gun than to the pen". This Popular Edition does not include the introductory material or the appendices of the second edition, consisting of the whole text of the first edition plus the short author's Preface.
