ANDREW SMITH. BORN 2nd NOVEMBER 1874. DIED 4th SEPTEMBER 1905. TO HIS MEMORY. 1907.

Thirty page introduction by John Stirling dated 25th December 1907, so presumably the book was published in 1908. Andrew Smith was a Scottish lawyer who died of typhoid at the age of thirty-one". In 1895, when he was 21 years of age, he edited a type-written magazine "The Chronicles of the Clique". Its four numbers contained some excellent articles". . . . In 1896 he founded and edited the magazine, "The Scots Angler" which ran (monthly?) only from July 1896 until June 1897. He was an active campaigner for the introduction of a close time for trout in Scotland as well as other reforms of fisheries. This is a collection of articles and lectures by Smith, presumably edited by Stirling, most of which had previously been published in "The Scots Angler". The subjects include Practical worm fishing; August angling; Tourists; Ye Citie Angler; Izaak Walton; and Sketches of sport in the Hebrides. He was evidently a fine angler who specialised in fine angling for trout in Scottish rivers, and in loch-fishing for trout and sea-trout in the Western Isles. Two variant bindings seen - both in green leather. One is a soft smooth-finished calf, the other a darker, firmer pebble-finished leather.
