" When you stop to consider you will realize that while the average sportsman does not consider himself interested in optics, there are but few who do not own some type of rifle scope, spotting scope, a pair of binoculars or a camera. ...It is a fact that the average sportsman's knowledge of the essentials of optics and what should be looked for in order to produce the most suitable equipment for a particular purpose, is practically nil. He depends in most cases 100 percent upon the persuasiveness of the salesman (who frequently knows little more than the customer) and of course, upon a few outstanding names such as Bausch and Lomb and Zeiss, which are in themselves a guarantee of quality. ...One of the principal reasons for the general ignorance on this subject is that it is normally such a highly technical one that books on the subjects are far beyond the comprehension of the average man. Up to this time, no book has ever been published which has made basic optics really basic - yet sufficiently thorough, while at the same time being readable and extremely interesting to anyone with the slightest inclination to increase his knowledge along these lines. ...[This book] has been written with emphasis on those points in which the sportsman would be most interested. Particular attention has been given to the matter of rifle and spotting scopes, as well as binoculars and cameras. A short outline on the principles of microscopes and astronomical telescopes has been included". (From the preface by A.F. Stoeger). Chapters include:- Optical terms and concepts; Basic optical components; Instruments and the eye; Rifle scopes; Binoculars; Telescopes; Cameras; The microscope; Optical malfunctions; Deterioration of optical instruments; Maintenance of optical instruments; Theoretical optics. Appended is a glossary of optical terms.
