.# This is the catalogue of an exhibition of working drawings by C.F. Tunnicliffe, held at the Royal Academy of Arts, 3rd August to 29th September 1974". The working drawings in this exhibition have been selected from the mass of records of study, research and observation accumulated over many years and it is good of Mr. Tunnicliffe to part with them even temporarily. It is, however, doubtful whether he would ever have agreed to do so, had it not been for the thoughtful persuasion of Mr. Kyffin Williams who realized the great interest attached to this important aspect of the artist's work. Thanks are also due to the distinguished ornithologist Dr. Bruce Campbell for helping to make an ordered selection from the hundreds of drawings there were to choose from. Choice was difficult owing to the individual interest of almost every sheet. Dr. Campbell's help was therefore invaluable in making a reasonable selection of the various species included in these studies, made by a man whose interest in nature, and ability as an artist combine to make a complete and insuperable contribution to art and ornithology". Sir Thomas Monnington, President of the Royal Academy, in his preface. C.F. Tunnicliffe was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in 1921, was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1944 at the age of 43, and Royal Academician, in 1954. In 1947, Tunnicliffe took up residence at Malltraeth, on Anglesey, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
