COARSE FISHING WITH THE EXPERTS. By John Norman.
. 1957 1st edition. 8vo (142 x 222mm). Pp208. B/w line drawings. Green cloth, silver-gilt kingfisher motif to upper board, spine titled in silver-gilt.
A very useful compilation of articles on angling for specific species of coarse fish. The authors are Richard Walker, J.W. Martin (The Trent Otter), Maurice Ingham, Peter Thomas, Captain L.A. Parker, John Ellis, Frank Murgett, Jim Sharp, Cyril Smith ("Gordonian"), H.T. Lubbock, Kenneth Clower, Henry Coxon and John Norman himself. No less than six of the articles are by J.W. Martin but these are balanced by those of specimen hunters of the nineteen-fifties such as Walker, Thomas and Ingham. The preface consists of short biographies of each of the contributors and it is apparent from this that the editor had died shortly before the publication of this collection. It states that he had been working on a book on the great anglers of the Trent, from Bailey to Coxon, at the time of his death*. Two alternate dust-wrappers were issued for the first edition. The first - a green dust-wrapper titled in white with black illustration of fishes encircling the title. The second - an orange dust-wrapper titled in black with a black and white photograph of a hooked chub. The only apparent difference is that Anthony Shepherdson is mentioned on the green dust-wrapper as a contributor. He is omitted from the orange dust-wrapper. I can find no mention of Shepherdson within the book. This copy has the green dust-wrapper.
