COUNTRY FAIR: A MONTHLY JOURNAL OF THE OPEN AIR. Edited by Macdonald Hastings with A.G. Street. Volume 2. Jan - June 1952

Six issues (Jan - June 1952) in one cloth-bound volume. Large 8vo (173 x 249mm). Pp576. B/w illustrations, photographs, ads, colour covers to each magazine. Green cloth, spine titled in gilt.

A bound copy of six of the original journals, January to June 1952, bound by the publishers. The magazine is a delightful compendium of country lore, written by many leading experts in their fields. Contributors of articles include 'B.B.', Constance Spry and Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald, some of the photographs are by Eric Hosking, and the unforgettable cover designs are by John Hanna. Articles from the first issue alone include: What every cook should know about hares; Clothes and the hunting man; The story of the red deer; How a field is ploughed. There is even a monthly crossword, concentrating on a specific area of the United Kingdom. I'd buy this just for the crosswords, the covers and the advertisements, so typical of this era, let alone the excellent articles.
