FALCONS AND FALCONRY. Compiled by John Wilkes and edited by J. Jones.

(1810) ND [1970] 1st edition thus - paperback issue. 4to (105 x 286mm). Not paginated (30 pages of text and 10 plates plus a number of blank leaves - c. 52pp). Ten full page b/w plates from engravings by I.L. Reinold, plus text engravings.

A modern reprint of the extensive entries on falcons and falconry taken from Encyclopaedia Londinensis (1793-1826). "This encyclopedia article provided important falconry information in a period generally devoid of falconry literature." (Swift). The Encyclopaedia Londinensis was an attempt at a statement of all knowledge at time of publication, and ran to 24 volumes. Volumes 1-22 (and so, this article) were edited by J. Jones and Volumes 23 and 24 by G. Jones, (information from the Smithsonian Libraries). The title-page of Volume 7 credits John Wilkes of Milland House with having "compiled, digested and arranged" the work. This 1970 off-print was the only commercially available source of this discussion of falcons and falconry from the turn of the Nineteenth Century.
