FISHES I HAVE KNOWN. By Arthur H. Beavan.

1905 1st edition. Small 8vo (130 x 192mm). Pp279 + 8pp ads. b/w plates and text illustrations from photographs, engravings and paintings. Binding A. Pictorial green cloth, titled in gilt, with image of garfish and pike on blue background.

The author was very well-travelled and plied a rod all around the world, describing in detail the fish and cetaceans that he saw and caught. Beavan describes in greatest detail the fisheries of Australia, South America, South Africa, and of the world's great oceans. The section on British freshwater fish deals largely with the author's experiences as a young man in the lakes and rivers of the Home Counties. He was also author of Birds I Have Known (1905), and Animals I Have Known (1905). Chapter XIV describes aspects of the pilchard fishery in Cornwall, including seining under the direction of huers and packing fumadoes. Photographs in this chapter by Gibson and Sons in the period when they were in Penzance.
