FLY-FISHING IN IRELAND: SOME PRACTICAL HINTS ON PROCEDURE, LOCALITY AND NEW METHODS OF FLY DRESSING. By Thomas James Hanna. De luxe leather-bound edition.
(1933) 2003 new edition. 8vo (143 x 226mm). Ppxii,175. B/w photograph plates, illustrations. Quarter-bound in black leather over sage paper-covered boards, five raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. Special edition limited to 60 copies.
Tommy Hanna of Moneymore was an innovative and imaginative fly-dresser. He corresponded with Skues, Harding and McClelland, and Courtney Williams devotes two pages to his patterns, comparing him favourably with Skues - "but the Irishman has more imagination". The special edition is handsomely quarter-bound in black leather over sage paper-covered boards, five raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The slipcase also encloses a cloth-bound folder containing three booklets: two facsimile catalogues; one of Alcocks True-Form Flies, an invention of Hanna; one of Hanna's own catalogues entitled "Facts about flies;" and a copy of Hanna's short story, "The Reprieve," written for the P.E.N. Club, 1944. Tipped onto the front paste-down is a sample of seal's fur in Hanna's original packet. Sixty copies of this edition were produced, 50 being numbered and available for sale, the remainder being lettered A-K and for private distribution. This is one of the numbered copies. A nicely produced de luxe issue of an important book.
