Born in the Vale of Glamorgan in 1847, Edwin Price was a prominent foxhunter and sportsmen in the area throughout his life. "...In due course he became a prominent member of the Glamorgan Hunt... and also became Honourary Secretary to The Llanharran and Ystrad Hunt... He had also rendered yeoman service to The Glamorgan Hounds, and when Mr. Samuel Gibbon retired from the Mastership of these hounds, he made a presentation to him of an inscribed Silver Cup, as a mark of appreciation for what Price had done for the benefit of Foxhunting in Glamorgan. ...He was deeply interested in Hunter breeding and was a member of The Light Horse and Hunter Improvement Society. ...He was an exhibitor of horses and stock at some of the leading shows, and not infrequently acted as a Hunter Judge." (Higginson, 1949). "The title of this book will fairly explain its nature. It is simply a record and a reprint of Horn and Hounds in Wales and some adjoining districts, part of which has been gained by personal experience. The greater proportion, however, is from information furnished by various sporting authors and several friends to whom I tender my grateful thanks. ...The utmost the work can aspire to is that the notes compiled may be found fairly representative of the period in question, derived, as it is, chiefly from oral testimony for the past seventy years or more, and merely a Scrap Book to refer to when fond memories revert to the noble pastime of hunting in by-gone days. ...To add greater interest, I have included several notes and tales, which, though foreign to Welsh districts, are closely allied to the subject. Among them will be found some notes and extracts relating to the earliest date of hounds and hunting, with some cleverly-written tales that seem to have some local interest." (From the author's introduction). The book carries no date of publication. Various bibliographies and libraries date it anywhere between 1889 and 1905. There are many references in the book to the year 1888 and thus far we have not found any dates mentioned in the book later than this. 1889 therefore seems a fairly likely date of publication. The author also wrote under the pseudonym, Ringwood, and was a regular contributor to The Field.
