"Though the rivers of Britain are a national asset and a precious heritage, many of them have been allowed to become disastrously polluted by sewage and trade effluents. Mr. Kempster (who dies while this book was going to press) has this problem much at heart and his book is designed to arouse the public conscience to the necessity of preserving or restoring the purity of one of our main sources of water supply. Since migratory fish are pre-eminently good judges of pure water, Our Rivers begins with a short account of the Salmon and its enemies - not the least among whom is man.
