First published in the Badminton Library volume on Salmon and Trout, edited by Harry Cholmondely-Pennell and published in 1885. Featuring a new Introduction by David Burnett. Apart from his legendary prowess as a caster and salmon fisher, Major Traherne is revered among expert fly-tyers as the greatest artist who ever tied a feather to a hook. Traherne was persuaded to contribute this essay to the volume on Salmon and Trout Fishing in the Badminton Library series. To honour this exceptional fisherman, described by Marston in The Fishing Gazette (1901) as "...one of the best salmon anglers and most genial of men", we have reproduced this text, including the Kelson fly section (whichhas some additional patterns by Farlow) to make a unique book.
