SNOWDEN SLIGHTS, WILDFOWLER. By Sydney H. Smith. With illustrations from photographs by the author.

(1912) 1984 new edition. Small 8vo (140 x 215mm). Ppxiv,117 + 11pp advertisements. Two b/w plates by Stanley Duncan, b/w photographs, map. Quarter dark-blue leather, upper board and spine titled in gilt.

Snowden Sleights was a professional fowler in "ings and carrs" of the valley of the Yorkshire Derwent in the latter part of the Nineteenth Century. Chapters on punts and punt-gunning, wildfowling and flight shooting, the birds of the Derwent Valley, and on salmon, eel and lamprey fishing. Well-illustrated with contemporary photographs and with two plates by Stanley Duncan. One of the scarcest of our early wildfowling books. For this new edition Major Grahame had access to Sydney Smith's original photographic plates. In consequence, the photographs reproduced in this book are in a larger format, and of very much higher quality, than those in the first edition. He also reproduces several which did not occur in the first edition. Quarter dark-blue leather over buckram boards, this is a numbered copy from an edition limited to five hundred.
