THE FLY-FISHER'S TEXT-BOOK. By Theophilus South, Gent.
# 1841 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 233mm). Ppvi,231 + 4 + 8pp ads. Frontispiece and 11 engraved plates. Green blind-stamped cloth.
# Salmon and trout fishing mostly in North Wales and Scotland. Theophilus South was the pseudonym of Edward Chitty, Barrister-at-law. "The work is one of the best of its class..." (Westwood and Satchell). This first edition was issued in 1841 with 12 plates plus additional woodcuts in the text. A later edition, published in 1845, was re-titled "The Illustrated Fly-Fisher's Text-Book" and contained an additional 10 plates and a more elaborate gilt-decorated binding. The text appears to be the same in both issues, probably using the same book blocks as noted in Westwood and Satchell "There is but one impression: the 1841 issue, containing 12 engravings together with woodcuts, being re-issed with additional illustrations by Mr. Bohn."
