(1980) 1980 US edition. Pp154,ad. B/w photographs and illustrations, bibliography. Blue cloth.

Detailed account of the biology and ecology of the nene, or Hawaiian goose, and the conservation effort directed at its preservation. "A timely and absorbing account of the recent history of the ...Nene, its descent to near extinction, its eleventh hour rescue and current restoration to the wild". From an original population of about 25,000 , by the Second World War, there were fewer than fifty individuals remaining. At the time of publication, efforts at Pohakuloa and Slimbridge had increased the worldwide stock to more than 2,000 birds, and efforts were underway to reintroduce the bird to the wild. This is the American edition of Poyser's original title, the two books being to all intents and purposes identical.
