THE HISTORY OF FLY FISHING. VOLUME TWO: TROUT FLY PATTERNS 1496-1916. By Andrew Herd.

2012 1st edition. Large 8vo (180 x 253mm). Pp272. B/w illustrations. Green boards, spine titled in gilt.

This is the second volume of Andrew Herd's "The History of Fly Fishing," which begins with "Volume One: The History," itself a much-expanded version of his original book, "The Fly," first published in 2001. "Volume Two: Trout Fly Patterns 1496-1916" lists chronologically all the famous British fly patterns by author and the many variations of each fly, alongside published tying instructions, a glossary of fly-tying terms and useful information on hook scale conversions. This represents the first attempt anyone has ever made to reproduce every significant list of British fly patterns published prior to 1916. There is a full and easy-to-search index of all the patterns listed. A very useful and easy-to-navigate reference book.
