THE MAKING OF YNYSLAS: TALES FROM AN AREA THE SIZE OF WALES - 25,000 YEARS AGO TO THE PRESENT DAY. By John S. Mason.

# (2019) 2021 1st edition reprint. Oblong 8vo (210 x 147mm). Pp71. Colour photographs, maps and illustrations, brief bibliography and references.

# Ynyslas (Ynys Las, 'Verdant Island') is a former island, and now a sandy promentory. It forms the southern outer boundary of Cardigan Bay's Dovey Estuary. Geologist, John Mason, describes the long-term formation of the area around Ynyslas, from earliest pre-history to the present day. The role of the climate, and particularly glaciation events, is discussed, as is the subsequent era of human habitation. This extends through the steady drowning of Cardigan Bay from about 11,700 years ago when the Irish Sea was dry land, to the present day. This is the era of Cantre'r Gwaelod and its capital, Caer Wyddno, which was destroyed by the sea flooding through its dykes, and the Borth forest now lying below the high tide mark. A fascinating and authoritative book with numerous excellent photographs.
