Gwen Broadley was the breeder of the famous Sandylands strain of labrador retrievers and was for many years judge of Gun Dog breeds at Crufts. "Mrs Gwen Broadley started showing Labroadors whilst still in her teens, and it took five, long struggling years to 'make up' her first Champion, which was her second Labrador. Thus, she knows what it is to be a novice, and suffer many disappointments. Three black Labrador champions were made pre-war, and she was lucky to be able to keep a nucleus of stock through the difficult war years, and to be able to bring out a black bitch to win Best in show at the first Breed Championship show to be held after the war. Since then many Champions have been owned and bred in the Sandylands Kennels. Cocker Spaniels, Pointers, English Springer Spaniels and, of course, Black and Yellow Labradors."
