Noel Sedgwick was the editor of The Shooting Times and begin this book with material he wrote for this paper". As Editor of this journal, and as a member of various committees allied to sport, I am naturally in a very favourable position to observe and to understand many matters which may not be altogether clear to the 'ordinary reader'. In this respect, and while giving away nothing of a confidential nature, I have devoted one chapter to the vexed question of wildfowl protection, for I feel most strongly that every sportsman, whether he is a wildfowler or not, should be made aware of the very real dangers to his interests. Apart from this chapter, I have endeavoured to write on those very ordinary subjects which I believe will interest the great majority of shooting men, rather than a section of them. There is little in this book about organised shooting (or large bags), except as it affects those who occasionally shoot as guests and those who love dog work, especially that concerning picking-up at organised shoots. Every shooting man is, or should be, an amateur naturalist, enjoying to the full his environments and the wild life he sees, and being able to identify the more common birds, interpreting their voices and movements to his own benefit. For that reason, a certain amount of natural history will be found among the chapters on shooting". Chapters include: Working for your game; Wildfowl protection; Shooting field problems; Bane of the keeper; Rabbits and rabbiting; Side-lights on hares; Pigeon shooting small days; Round and about; Very rough shooting; From my diary; Natural history casebook; Pastures new.
